Discover
the history of our
champagne
It all began
in 1875 with
Émile LeRoy
It was Emile Leroy, a winegrower from Ecueil (near Reims), who began marketing his wines with his friend Gustave Saroul. This friend, a pioneer in the field of advertising, sold Emile’s wines in the Marseille region. He featured his emblem on the label: a lion rolling a globe beneath its paw. In their memory, we have been using this design again since December 2008.

At the beginning of the 20th century
In 1911, Henri
succeeded his father
, Émile LeROY
Henri and his wife Marguerite Dussaut built the current estate in Les Mesneux, Marguerite’s home village. Every day, Henri cycles to tend his vines in Ecueil, 6 km away, his moustache blowing in the wind, his tools on the luggage rack.

Did you know?
The design of the cathedral on our muselet plates dates back nearly fifty years.
It was our grandmother, Marguerite Leroy, who sketched Reims Cathedral as she could see it whilst working in her vineyards. We therefore pay tribute to her by keeping this emblem on our labels, which are a delight to collectors (known as ‘placomusophiles’).

The Leroy-Bertin
brand was
founded in 1938
Philippe took over from Henri alongside his wife Marguerite Bertin; by combining their surnames, the Leroy-Bertin brand was born. War broke out; Philippe was taken prisoner, and Marguerite was forced to leave the estate and seek refuge at her sister’s house with her son Maurice. Four years later, Philippe returned; together with his wife, they repaired the damage caused by the war and rebuilt the estate.

Philippe, Maurice and Marguerite
From 1965 onwards, Maurice began developing
the estate
Maurice took over from Philippe, alongside his wife Marie Thérèse Bertin. Together, they consolidated and expanded the Leroy-Bertin brand. The Champagne region is booming. Maurice expands the estate, planting vines on land inherited from his grandfather Henri. Marie Thérèse modernises the marketing of the champagne.
